I would not loosen them, but just torque them down. If you loosen them, I think you have the chance of un-sealing the gasket and it may create more problems. That is my opinion anyway.
Replace PCV valve, it's cheap, and could stll be your problem. Valve stem/guide seals could be getting old/hard and causing problem as well, are you sure car doesn't smoke on start up after it's sat overnight?
Good point. I thought he had said that he had checked the PCV valve before, but re-reading, he had just pulled the PCV to check for gases. This would explain all the plugs being in the same condition, but would not really explain the smoke out of one side. He did say that he did not have smoke at start up, so I do not think it's his stem seals. I would agree that replacing the PCV would be a good next step.
Breather not so much. The breather is basically an air intake filter. The vaccum from the carb sucks gases out of the drivers side valve cover through the PCV valve. The PCV system works basically sucking air in though the breather through the crankcase and out the PCV valve into the carb. If the PCV valve is bad, it could be sucking oil into the carb. Another cheap possibility.
Well, it IS a 68. Heaven forbid anything be like the rest of the cars. Doesn't matter. The concept is the same. Your gases just go the opposite direction.
Good luck with the diagnosis. Which side the PCV/breather are on doesn't matter (as long as not the same side!!). Factory is driver side, but if you have an open breather (not connected to air filter, like a Mr. Gasket) you can freely switch sides.
Actually the driver side has a closed off PCV grommet (sealed with epoxyed in nickels, thanks for the 20 cents bubba!).. plus the breather

Interesting bubba.
Well, I'll see your Spruce Goose, and you'll see my bubbamobile. Only problem is... I'M THE BUBBA!!!!
Extra odd update - The Misfits had a gettogether saturday at Tia's, and I went to it (about 40-45 miles each way). Before leaving, I was around half a quart low on oil, and added what I had on hand of Marvel Mystery Oil, leaving me just a hair below full. After getting home, I checked, and she was reading right at full. Now most of the ride was not so high RPMs as the trip to vettes at the rock, but on the way out Peach + Mean Green 2000 passed me so I decided to play "Chase the C5s" for a while, and definitely saw some high rpms for a bit there :jester (just had to let em know that old fiberglass could hang up till 75mph or so).. So I still have no idea what the heck is going on inside the engine :p:
I actually torqued down a AFR Flo Power intake to 25 ft/lbs and mashed down the aluminum surrounding the bolt holes. I'm going to bring it in to get it welded up. It may be OK on a stock intake with smaller holes, but I'd definately get the recommendations of the manufacturer of any aluminum intake before grabbing the torque wrench!
