and of course I want to fix it but need alittle help doing so. Let me start off by telling you what happened. The other day my friend and I are out on the town driving around and all of a sudden my car is making this whinning noise from the mid part of the car but still drives but i'm going like 40 mph at like 4000 rpms in which I thought it was the toque converter but my father thinks its the trans and now I have no clue what it is (confused). can you guys help me out please

First, check the trans fluid level, color and odor. If dark colored and burnt smelling, you may need a rebuild. When driving, does it shift into all gears? It should be a TH400, make sure the modulator vacuum hose is attached. More info is needed.

Like 75 mentioned check the color and smell of the fluid. I would also agree it's either the torque converter or the oil pump going bad. Either way the transmission is going to have to be removed.

Mine does as well. When I originally heard the noise, I put my car in 3(drive) and it didnt move. I checked my fluid immediately and it was a little low. Weird thing, no sign of a leak.

I warmed the car up to operating temp, added some Lucas tranny additive, drove car a mile with no problem at a low speed.

The weird thing, I can shift into all gears but:
- I only hear the noise when I rev engine or driving
- the car appears to drive fine at low speed but the noise is still there
- the car stopped squatting 2 or 3 times when placing in and out of reverse
- I got a hissing noise when going in reverse. Did you get this as well?

I was doing some research here on the forum and I saw that it could be a number of things. I would like to diagnose as much as possible before spending the big bucks on a rebuild.

Maybe someone can help us with a laundry list? This week Im going to try to find time to drop the pan, change out filter and gasket and pray that it solves my problem.
