Has anyone repaired a trim panel with missing threaded inserts. Panel is execellent shape other than 2 missing inserts. Have not been able to find where you can buy just the inserts. 1973 year. I thought about grinding down an appropriately sized nut and epoxy it in the existing holes but would rather use the original style insert if they are available.
Hi Duane,
I see the inserts and screws being sold as sets but not alone.
Could you use something like JB Weld to form the threaded insert in the trim piece?
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
Paul, they attach the retainer strip just inside the rear of the door opening. The screws commonly get rusted in and either break off or twist out the metal thread insert in the rear quarter panel interior trim.
I have used them on a few sets of quarter panels, and they work great. You just have to be careful when drilling out the old screws and inserts, that you do not drill through the panel itself.
These things work great unless the hole is destroyed. In many cases the side of the panel is broken out and when that happens you can repair it with some fiberglass and resin, or even plastic fusion. Either seems to hold just fine.
I've saved all the old quarter trim panels we removed from cars for years and in the past I would rob this insert from the broken panels, cut a slot in them and just screw them in place if needed. (the originals screwed in to the plastic panel backing)
just did mine a few weeks ago. removed the rusted insert and filled the hole with 5 minute epoxy. then drilled a small hole in the epoxy and used a short panhead screw.
