Since I have the door panels off from replacing the hinge pins on my 76, I thought it would be a good time to clean the lube my power window tracks. I certainly don't want to take them out - I just want to clean and lube in place as best as possible. That said, there is very limited access without removing the components. They work OK but are a bit slow coming up. What do you recommend as a cleaner and lubricant? I was thinking brake parts cleaner and lithium grease in a spray can. Thoughts?
I was reading a previous post and someone said that the spray can of lithium grease is too light weight for the door latch assembly...but I am thinking that a spray may be the only way to get in there.
If you really want it to work well, you need to remove the tracks. The reason is, the old grease has now turned into a hard crust. You really need to remove this old dried out grease to have it work well.
Removing the tracks is not that hard. If you have the panel off, that is 90% of the work. Also, if your windows are as ill fitting as mine were, this will help you to see how all the adjustments work.
Just finished doing the window thing, replace the window regulators and cleaned the tracks and any thing else that needed to be done, I would say the door panels are 10%, the track and all were about 90% in my book. The door panels are just the start, but it is worth the pain to complete the windows and get them right for one last time.
