I have my engine on a stand and the tranny and bellhousing off. I guess this is a good time to inspect the clutch... I have no idea about the condition since I have only driven the car around my block before I tore it down completely.
I'm a newbie to this, what should I look for? can I measure the thickness of the clutch disc without removing the pressure plate? If I remove the pressure plate, then I need the special tool to align it again, right?
If it were me, I'd replace the clutch pressure plate and disc since you don't know the history of the one that is in there. The aligment tool is cheap and many times comes with the clutch kit. Replace the throwout bearing and pilot bushing also.
First, mark a spot on the clutch housing and on the flywheel so you can reassemble it in the same orientation as when you take it apart.
Look at the condition of the clutch disc facing (inside and outside). See if there is significant grooving in the face that could indicate wear. Look at the amount of friction material still remaining that is above the surface of the bonding rivet heads. Also check the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate for any wear/grooving. If there is plenty of friction material left on the clutch disc and no significant grooving on any components, just clean all the surfaces with some brake cleaner (get all oil/grease off those surfaces) and put it back together.

Thanks for the input.
I will take it apart and have a look at the wear, and take it from there. If everything looks ok I will probably just put it back together.
I'm doing a frame off (or really a frame swap) and as much as I would like to replace everything it's just not in my budget. Especially since I live in Sweden and have to pay twice as much as you lucky guys for all parts, after taxes and shipping...

When you put it back together, while handy to have the alignment tool is not a must have item.
If you have a good eye its pretty easy to see when everything is aligned.
If you need a reference, just take a good look at everything before you take it apart.
