Default Power Steering valve internal wiev

Hi,

yesterday,I have done the rebuilt of PSV.
In the rebuild kit I have found a big "O-ring" but I don't find a palce to put it on.
Time ago I have bought another PSV for spare so I have decided to open it and I found this difference:

The left one is the old and was full of some liquid sealer everywhere ,the right is what I have put in the car.

In the left one appeare like someone have done a sort of honing work?
Wht do you think about this difference.

The large O ring goes in the groove around the bore.

I think the left one was designed to use a spacer plate with a rubberized gasket moulded to the plate. I saw one of these a few weeks ago. mike...

Do a search in the archives (or send a PM to Jim_Shea) for Jim Shea's papers on power steering component rebuilding. There are good drawings and descriptions of what is needed to rebuild the control valve correctly. Having more information is always a good thing.

Saw one at tracdogg2's place. I believe that valve is what he had. He stated that they almost always leak. I took the hose shield off of it but did not take it apart. mike...

I think without Oring the valve leak all the time.

I hope everithing work and no more leak,I have changed all hoses too.

I have started the engine with the car on hoist no problem.
I have receck the oil level 3 times.
I don't jet drive the car for a road test.

Sometime after 1976 the control valve was changed. The o-ring groove was eliminated in the housing and a metal plate with a molded rubber gasket was incorporated into the design. At that time the o-ring groove was eliminated. I can't find the metal plate in any of my control valve assembly drawings up through 1976. And for some reason I don't seem to have any control valve drawings that are listed as 1977 or later.

Do the rebuild kits include both an o-ring as well as the metal plate with rubber gasket? Or do they only come with a metal plate and rubber gasket that is expected to service both kinds of control valve housings?

Yes, Fords and Mercuries did have a control valve type linkage booster power assist steering. I do not think that they purchased their valves from Saginaw Steering Gear, however.

Pippo350, do you mind if I use your photo of the two control valve housings in one of my papers?

In the rebuild kit I have found the two O-ring and the metal plate(thin) without gasket.

@ Jim after the valve is balanced (I can move the cylinder rod in and out with the hand)
I'm done?I can drive the car in safety?

Thank you !!!

After you have rebuilt the valve and placed it in the car, be very careful when you first start the engine. If the valve is not balanced, it can very rapidly power the steering all the way to full lock in one direction. This can cause the steering wheel to whip all the way to full lock as well. Several people have reported that they suffered bruises from being hit by the steering wheel spoke when their hand or arm was in the way.

There is a procedure for balancing the valve after it is installed in the car.

I've gotten pretty good at balancing the valve in the vise using an air hose.
