Hey, I was wondering whether master cylinders are date coded. I'm thinking of replacing mine since the engine is out (along with just about every other part that moves), and if it's date coded and original, I'll spend a few extra coins to have it rebuilt.
Yes they are. They are date coded at the front line, just above the fitting. Very, very small characters. My '80 for instance is like YC0122. Which is 1980, 122nd day of the year. Depending on when your car was built, yours could be like YC6244, which would be 244th day of '76.
Also, the casting number can be "right side up", or "upside down" depending on whether the piece was cast on the day or night shift. Don't remember exactly, but they are date coded differently between day and night shift. Both use Julian dates, but one is "year"---day" format 3330, 1973, 330th day, and the other is "day---year" format, 3330, 1970, 333rd. day. :) Confused. I don't remember which is which. Chuck
Hmmmmm. I'm going to have to get some bright lights in my garage so I can figure out whether my M/C might be original. It's all rusty so any characters are pretty hard to see. Thanks for the info!
