Default Expensive repairs!

I was scanning thru some C5 threads and reading about ABS warning lites and such that cost $1500 at the stealership to fix ! Makes my $69 brake calipers seem pretty trivial.

that's the beauty of our cars. they used a lot more GM common parts than the C4s,5s, and 6s...

What also stinks the ABS systems on the GM cars are relatively simple to repair if you have access to the fancy scanner. Two years ago my 2003 monte carlo SS had the ABS light turn on and I had GM pull the failure code on their scanner for $60 dollars and they said I needed the Brake control module replaced for $1200 dollars. I said no and got home and cleaned the connector plug to the module and did a percussion adjustment to it and the light extinguised and has not came on since.

i had the ecbm go on my intrigue and sent it to modulemaster for a rebuild,$160,and i have been good for almost two years now.all the dash lites came on to warn me of the problem.on my c3 when my headlights were on, a red dash light came on to tell me so.that light was very annoying but by some stoke of luck the bulb blew out.what great simple cars.

The ABS light in my Caprice came on about 6 years ago. I tested the brakes, they still worked, cut the wire to the ABS light. Been stopping fine ever since.

I also have a C5 along with my 79.. The C5 is going up for sale before anything breaks.. Can't get replacement parts for the 97-2000 anywhere and the BCM is NOT rebuild-able! GM really stuck it to all us C5 owners! I was planning to buy a new 2011 but Im leaning towards the new Shelby.. Ford didn't drink the Obama Kool-Aid

I blame most of the cost on electronics. There are some things that are cheap to get repaired if you do the research. The ABS module can be rebuilt, but other stuff cannot. Additionally, the tolerances are tighter these days on things and there is always some special tool needed. For me the biggest repairs on my c5 have been due to the modifications I made and the repair work for the parts I break racing.

i just replaced an abs unit on a friends BMW R1150R. the part cost him 2395 dollars! i couldnt bring myself to charge him to install the thing. at least it took less than an hour and i didnt have to get my hands dirty. 2400 dollars for a part on a bike that will sell for around 4500. i love my carbureted, points ignitioned, mechanical drum brake bikes.

My "other" good car is an SVT GT MUSTANG it is sweet. I briefly thought about selling it and getting a C5 but I'M glad the thought passed.

There is a local guy in Wabasha , MN who rebuilds all sorts of modules. We had the ABS go bad for a club member and he got it fixed for under $100. Our local Chev dealer works with him to solve module issues. Call Brenengan Chev (800) 944-5705
They know him.
Good Luck,
Charlie
