Reporting Milage when you Register
Just thought I would share a little tip with you that I learned recently. As you may know from previous threads, my '77 was wrecked by the fault of another driver and was declared a total loss by his insurance company. The car had 42K miles when I bought it and now has about 85K. The adjuster asked me if the odometer had rolled and I told him it had not. Later, he called to tell me his report came back showing a previous registration at 100,000 miles, so it must have 185K miles and I got a lousy settlement offer.
I knew right away what had happened. The registration in question was my first from right after I bought the car. Being 10+ years old, the odometer was exempt and not recorded by the DMV. So instead of asking me the mileage, they just keyed in 100K, although the true mileage at the time was only 42K.
Long story short, I called the DMV and asked if they had a habit of punching in 100K, which they confirmed. This got sorted out with the insurance guy and the car was reappraised and I received a nice settlement. But this could have caused a lot of problems for me had the DMV not been so helpful (for a change). Lesson is to report the mileage at every registration, even if you do not have to. FYI. :flag
Shark - you are SOOOooo Lucky that you had somebody doing their job well at the DMV :yesnod: :yesnod: I guess the difference in the 2 settlements amounted to a coupla $$$ ;) Glad for ya!
