On my 72, attached to the side of the dash top pad reinforcement, is a metal cylindar part that has a plug with pink and green wires connected to it. I can't find it in the AIM. Anybody know what it is?

Reason: pic might help
I don't see it the 72 wiring diagram either. Nothing I found has a pink/green combination except the backup light switch and that's in the console (auto) or on the trans (manual).
I recall something about a wiper thing that was on the back of the speedo in some years but no idea what color the wires are.

I think you mean on the back of the tach. I have it, so it's not that.
Pink and Pink/black should be a switched hot....like your dizzy....
trick is, what that green wire goes to.....
and I have a '72 vert which WAS stock as a stove and absolutely NO recollection of that device on my car...not even a hole/hole set to mount it there....
My early 72 has that in there also. The 72s did have a light that went on only for about 20 second. It illuminated the seat belts light in the console gauges if I remember correctly. This may be for that.

That is what it is. A time delay relay that turned on the "Seat Belt" warning light for a few seconds when the ignition was turned on; this would happen if the seat belts were fastened or not.
Could be part of the circuit for the seatbelt warning buzzer and light in the center dash console. I have a '72 vert and when the ignition is turned on and the seatbelt is not connected, the red light in the center console lights and there's a warning buzzer with that, too. It'll buzz forever, not 20 seconds. The only way to shut it up is to connect the seatbelt or pull up one click on the hand brake. That stops the buzzer and puts the light out. Can't do much checking for you now, as the Vette is covered and buttoned up in the back of the garage for the winter. Sorry 'bout that!
I agree with all those who stated that it is the thermal delay for the seatbelt warning system.
That system is unique to only early 72's. Very early 72's had this simple system where the seatbelt warning light was illuminated for a brief period of time, and turned off automatically.
Later 72's had a more complex system that included switches in the seatbelt recievers, a pressure switch under the passenger seat, a tie in to the nuetral safty so that system was only activated in foward gear, and a buzzer to go along with the light.

Interesting, I learned something today ! Did the thermal delay just turn the light off or did it flash a couple times first ?
Interesting , I buy old harness's at swap meets to use for parts and I would have sworn the harness was a 73 but it had one of these thermal delay things. Must have been a 72 harness ! Thanks.
My 72 is an early built, August 71 car. The wiring harness actually has 71 on it. There is no signs of any connecters for the seat belts.
The light would just come on and stay on for 20 seconds then go off.
My 72 is also an early car, #456 built in August 71. When I was restoring my car, I tried with no luck to find a replacement for that part. I ended up using an industrial 12v time delay relay to make it work. It's the big orange thing in the pic.
