It's a real PITA to change all that stuff out, but I guess if you had the outside box and figured out a way of rebuilding the firewall back to heater only configuration (Cover up the extra large hole) then a no A/C heater core would work. In fact it is the only kind that would work, since the hoses for the core come out through the firewall right next to the core.
I was looking into doing this also since the original A/C in my 77' doesn't blow cold and I would like to take the weight off. I figure I would have to buy a new firewall cover and fab my own "hole cover" out of metal and just paint it black.
If you want to reduce weight, just remove the compresor, hoses, and dryer, that is were most of the weight is, I would leave all the other stuff in place, when you go to sell the vette you will get more $$ if the vette came with factory A/C
I agree with you that the car would be worth more with the factory parts. The thing is, this car has almost nothing left in it that came from the factory. Everything from the A/C system is gone except for the large object on the firewall. What is in there anyway??
2 rottie, what's in there is of course the evaporator coil...it's a pain to remove but in a small block car not all that bad really....
just about 6 or so bolts coming from fender toward center of car, and about 2-3 bolts under the dash, just above the rug line...and a nut on top...and that engine side of the clamshell should come off,...if the dum dum clay is not too brittle...
now then the motor housing should also be able to slide out of there....
but in fact, with the first part of housing removed and the mechanisms revealed, and a/c evap out, you should be able to judge from there what you need do....
I recently completed this conversion...but can't find the original post/reply.
The heater cores and almost everything on each side of the firewall is completely different..in fact the firewall is different also.
I found an A/C and a non A/C car side by side at Corvette Specialists in Omaha.
They were able to supply the necessary ductwork...and a piece of firewall to fill the need. I then bonded the piece to the firewall and attached all the new non A/C duct work to both sides of the firewall along with a new heater core.
