Default Side Yoke Help

All,

Got harnesses changed and interior all back togetheron my 76. Acually had it on the road and exercised it pretty well. I noticed what appeared to be rear chatter when pulling out and turning from a stop. Since I have it up on ramps to change the exhaust, I jacked it up and have about 1/4" play @ 12 & 6. It appears I have a worn side yoke. Is it changeable on the car or do i have to drop the diff? Anything special with set up? Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

John

If the yokes are worn the diff has to come out. There are snap rings on the yokes inside the carrier that have to be removed and or replaced.

Thanks for the quick reply. Obviously, not what I was hoping to hear. Guess I'll be looking for a servicable used diff.

Make sure that when you do that test (12&6) that you have someone looking under the car at the yoke to make sure that is where the movement is occurring.

If indeed your yoke is moving 1/4" inch in and out then you are due for a replacement side yoke. However this doesnt mean you need a servicable rear diff, the yoke(s) can be replaced singly or in pairs.

The diff can be troublesome to remove but its really only held in with three bolts. (two at the crossmember, one at the snubber) not including removing the halfshafts and spring.

I agree!
Service the diff. you have in there now. Not very hard as compared to some projects on a Vette
