I just rebuilt my front end and steering systems. New ball joints, bushings idler arm, tie rods, control valve, hoses, power steering pump, and cylinder.
Now the steering wheel is very hard to turn and it does not seem to matter if you are moving or not. Although it is a little easier to turn when you are moving. I have bled the system and centered the control valve. Not sure what else may be causing this issue but it sure does suck to drive right now.
As an experiment you could disconnect the ram shaft at the frame bracket and try driving a little to see if it steers easier. If it does you may have gotten a bad PS ram. And you are sure that you have all of the hoses connected correctly?
Well thats just the thing, I thought I had them all right but don't know how to double check that. I don't think it is possible to cross them to the pump but maybe to the cylinder can I just switch them from their current position? Will that hurt anything? or otherwise how do I check proper placement of those hoses?
Okay so I made sure that I bleed the system and that was not the problem I also checked to make sure that at least most of the torque specs were good and I could lift the car and move the wheels back and forth by hand the tire pressures are good and i removed the ram although I have not driven the car without the ram attached I did observe it with the car on jackstands and it extended when the wheel was turned to the left and retracted when it was turned to the right although fairly slowly and it did not seem like allot of power behind it. Keep in mind I have never seen one of these work before.
That is how I have the hoses I am going to try just driving with it un attached and see if it gets easier. I dont know how one of these acts when it fails other than leaking?
What kind of ball joints? We had a Chevelle in here this summer and put some ball joints in it that were not from our usual supplier (customer supplied) and two of four were completely frozen. It's a thought...
They are free I can move the whole linkage when the car is up on jackstands. I am thinking that I have a bad power steering pump. Any recommendations on how to test that or what brand to buy?
