I am working on a 75. Can't get the engine to run even with gas from an external fuel source. It does run when I pour gas directly into the carb bowl but it doesn't get the gas through the gas line. So I would guess that at this point there is something in the carb that doesn't let the fuel through.
Should I take the carb out to clean it or is the anything I can do while it is still in the car?
pull and check the fuel filter, its in the carb fuel inlet if its a quadrajet. or someone may have spliced one in line somewhere, then i would check the fuel pump, if it wont pull fuel from an external source.
Has a new fuel filter in it. I connected a hose with a funnel to the intake and after cranking the engine none of the fuel from that hose made it into the carb at all. I know it is a Rochester Quadrajet but can't read any of the horizontal numbers on the side.
If you just poured gas down the throat of the carb fill the bowl up the through the bowl vent and try to crank the engine it should run for about thirty seconds.
To test the fuel pump
Disconnect the line at the carb connect a temp hose over the end and put it to a bucket and crank the engine over and see if the pump is pumping but disconnect the hot wire to the coil first. if you don't a bad plug wire letting an errant spark out could start a fire... thirty year old FIberglass burns pretty fast.
These carbs are very bad about oxidation on the inside if left with no fuel in them. Could be a carburetor full of crud...
They also have a rubber tipped needle under the float the could be stuck to the seat of the fuel inlet if it has been sitting for a while
