The bolts go through the firewall and inside the cab. You have to get to the nuts from the inside all the way up behind the dash. Its tight and not exactly fun to get to. Once you get the nuts off and disconnect it from the brake pedal it will slide out ot the firewall
Deep sockets, ujoints and extensions. This will allow you to get to the nuts. One of them is a real bugger and most of the time you do it by feel rather than sight. Take your time. Sometimes if you are a bigger guy it is easier to take the drivers seat out.
one more note. I just took mine out last week. one of the studs has 2 nuts on it. first one holds the booster on and the second one holds wiring. its hard to see up there so if you take off 4 nuts and the booster wont come out there is still one nut left. change the booster to firewall gasket also as it will probably be junk.
Here's a pic of the bolt pattern you're feeling for and a pic of the hardest nut to reach on top. You can also see part of the clip.
It's easiest to either jack front of the car up or put on a hoist so that you can comfortably kneel beside it and still reach up to locate the nuts by hand feel. the clip and pin are the hardest, you'll actually have to see that, just lean in for that.
Use a deep 9/16" socket>universal>total of 24" extension>ratchet, all 3/8 drive.
If you have a/c. then you must first remove the lower left dash duct under the column.
Only takes about 10 minutes of under dash work to have ready to slip out.
I've done this. Of course, you have to take the driver's seat out. It is possible to do this all with the steering column in place. It's very difficult. If you take the steering column out, it's very easy. The steering columns on my 68 and 70 are easy to take out. The 68 was easy to reinstall, haven't tried to reinstall the 70 yet. I don't see any problem with it.
I highly recommend that you just pull the drivers seat first, no matter what size you are.
Definitely take the drivers seat out so you can lie on your back with your feet in the back. Have all your tools and light within reach so you don't have to get in and out a few times.
Here is a picture of the brake booster removal tool I found to work best:
Don't expect to move the nuts more than a quarter of a turn at a time.
Well we didn't remove the seat but it was next... We did remove the steering column. That helped a lot.
We learned a lot. Found that at one time it had a remote starter...Found the the brake light & cruse control switch had no nuts on it. & tons of wiring had been messes with.
Thanks again everybody for you help.
PS - we ended up making a socket set up almost like the one pictured.
