Default Ammeter or Voltmeter?

I am almost done re-wiring my dash in my '69 and have a open spot for a new guage. I currently have Autometric Phantom gauges. I have oil press. water temp. fuel level and vaccum.
I was wondering if given the option between an Ammeter or a Voltmeter, which would you install?
I had a voltmeter in the space and for some reason it now gives me no reading. What would be the proper way to check for a defective voltmeter?
Would the wiring be the same if I went to a ammeter?
Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions and Happy New Year!

I would stick with the volt meter as the voltage displays the Force your system currently holds to put out where as an Amp meter will measure the current, (how many electrons are passing through the system)

To test the gauge simply apply a known voltage source to the gauge... a 9V would work well(small and portable) or you would take it out and hook it directly to the car battery..

I wouldn't think you could use the same wiring as is... keep in mind a voltage reading needs to be in parallel where as a current reading needs to be taken in series (inline like christmas lights)

The wires currently ran to that gauge are likely in paralle with the circuit..

Hope I helped... ask any more questions if you have'em.. I'm an electronics technitian by trade and gald to help...

For aftermarket gauges, go with the voltmeter. All the aftermarket ammeter are full flow, they have to be between the alternator and the battery so they need a very large gauge wire. Factory ammeters use a shunt so they only measure part of the flow and are calibrated. Much safer that way.

Thanks. I guess I will stick with the voltmeter.
The link given by Dantana leads me to all the info I will need to re-attach all my gauges.
Thanks Again and...
Happy New Year!!!
