Default 4sp shifter, whats up

Before I take the shifter apart I wanted to check to see that it worked properly. It dosen't work the reverse lever. With a gauge through the slots putting the levers in neutral the reverse lever is to far forward. Plus there is a thin piece between the reverse and the middle lever. The first pic is with the gauge in so all are in neutral;

The second pic is pulling up on the tee and trying to move over to reverse.

In the third pic I mover the reverse lever to the rear so the shifter handle bottom could get in front of it but the thin metal piece is still in the way.
When I pull up on the tee is the only thing that happens is the rod gets out from between so the handle can move over or is something else supposed to happen??

WoW, Might want to reduce the size of those pics. Bought locked my mess up.

I don't know what you are trying to do with that stick through the slot, but take that out. Look at the rear of the shifter housing and see that half hole. Lay a drill bit on that hole and align all of the arms to bump that gauge. You are blocking the shifter gate.

You need to get the end of the shift lever into the slot you have the stick through.
The stick is too thick to use as an alignment tool. Here is my alignment tool.

Hi Roger,
Happy New Year!
Your 'tool' makes my 'gauge' made from a plastic paint scraper look pretty amateur!
Nice NCRS sticker, though.
Regards,
Alan

You may want to throw a shifter rebuild kit in. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....0g~Z5Z5Z5GAVUA

It will take all the slop out of the shifter and make it feel like new.

Now I get it. I had to read Rodgers comment 3 times and look at the shifter in between. I didn't know the handle end was supposed to be in the slot as it was in front of the levers when I took the car apart. I wondered why the 1/2 and 3/4 only moved in one direction but I was more concerned how it was going to get in front of the reverse one.
I am going to rebuild it. I just wanted to understand it before dissasembly. Thanks to you guys now I do.
The pic of parts in the rebuild kit, the two things at the bottom. I only see one between reverse and 1/2. Is ther supposed to be one between 1/2 and 3/4?

My 79 has the Hurst Shifter... I like it. Easy to shift and looks great with the big white HURST ball!

Only 1 shim is used, they supply 2 thicknesses depending on how much slop in the assembly
