Default Crack in frame

I'm replacing the springs, shocks and control arm bushings on my '79 and I've found a crack in the frame. It's on the upper shock tower and goes from the oval all the way to the lip. Is this common? I assume I'll have to get this welded?

I can't see it but none the less...If you have a cracked frame it will have to be repaired.

My 79 frame crackfrom where the rear lower a-arm bolt is clear up around the side of the frame. I arc welded and ground it flat then welded on external gussets across the area on both sides so it would not happen again.

These frame cracks are quite common, weld it up and your done. Beware of using too much power as the metal is not that thick and you can easily burn a hole right thru with 120v mig welder, which of course can be filled in.

Slightly notch the crack to get good penetration. If you are taking it to a pro, get it done with a TIG. Less heat and better weld if he knows what he is doing.

I agree with vogie. Tig it if you know someone who Tigs. Tig will look better and will be less likely to blow a hole through it.
