The ZZ4 has D shaped exhaust ports and Hedman makes a header specially for the ZZ4.
Have them on my ZZ4.
Love the engine.

The HO with a LT4 Hot Cam Kit will still idle fine according to Car Craft. The LT4 cam is "hot" but not so crazy that it doesn't idle. Read here for more info:

At the end of the day ... YearOne 350 is essentially same plus some portwork & HP ... take time & effort into account & YearOne reman pencils out thousands less.

I sure like a NEW motor & a locally-enforceable GM warranty. That said, several here installed the YearOne 350; ain't heard any whining yet. YearOne sells serpentine kits & parts; it's likely they'd do a turnkey pkg.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Glad to hear I can get the hot cam without overheating worries. BTW, what's the HP gain with the hot cam? I haven't seen a number yet...

I would love to know how YearOne has stacked up to GM crates. I would like to drive my car a lot more often once I get everything done but I doubt it'll be more than 2x week on average...

I've done a little more research on the forum and have found some good threads on using the standard GM serpentine 'dressing' for a ZZ4 like this one:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...ne-system.html

. There are several changes that need to made including finding a shorter water pump of course. It makes me wonder whether there are specifically c3 turnkeys out there or not or whether I just just reuse my old parts. I'd personally prefer to modernize where I can and where it makes sense..

Another dumb question I have is why putting a shorter water pump in doesn't throw the rest of the serpentine system off alignment?

Thanks again, your responses have gotten me down to some concrete questions/plans now! I've got one week left to make my plan!

if it must be brand new
compare apples to apples

about $2800 350HO BASE vortec http://sdparts.com/details/gm-perfor...parts/19210007 that's a flat tappet motor. 2 yr/50K mile GMPP warranty

about $2200 production roller vin 8 L31 350 vortec http://sdparts.com/details/gm-goodwr...gines/12530283 this one has both roller lifters & 4 bolt mains. Me thinks a clever fellow can buy the motor & get a hot cam, better springs, rockers & its mechanical fuel pump boss drilled for around $3K total. 3 yr/100K mile GM warranty ... end up with a new +400HP piece for around $3K

Not dumb q at all.
The GMPP serpentine setups for turnkey 350HO & ZZ4 use a long pump & long pump only. Short pump will Not align, not even close with those 2 setups. Long pump with mechanical fan will shove fan too close to rad. Now, you can run a long pump in a C3 but you must delete the mechanical fan & must substitute an electrical fan.

Thanks. So does that mean that I misunderstood the following section from the link I reference above:

4) The Serpentine Belt system has a reverse rotation water pump. You need a reverse rotation mechanical fan. Best solution is to install an electric fan. Also, the Serpentine Belt system supplies you with a cast iron reverse rotation pump. Replace it with a lightweight Edelbrock reverse rotation pump.

I had assumed it was saying to use a short pump but I guess not. I'm gathering that the short pump is really what folks are using when they want to reuse their old parts and keep the mechanical fan? Or in other words when people have put a ZZ4 with a serpentine system they've done so using the long pump and electric fan...

As for the engine base...sure, I'd love to have the smarts to build up from some generic GM base but I don't unless someone can describe in detail their configuration for me. Otherwise it sounds to me like I can't go wrong building around a ZZ4 with the hot cam...

Thanks!

After all my research on engines, I have decided to go with the Yearone. The builder is actually just an hour away from me so I might just buy direct from him to make it easy to pick up and get to actually see the dyno pull. I haven't heard anything bad about them yet. I just can't beat it for the price.

Does YearOne sub their work out? Do they really stand behind their work?

This is the one 350 400+ HP one seems to get good reviews:CT350PC1

How's the cam? Any cam options?

From what I understand this is the builder http://www.dpmpower.us/ and they sell to another company that supplies yearone. I have only heard of 1 person in here that got a bad engine and had it replaced. Don't remember what his problems were.

I haven't heard of any cam offerings that they offer. I figure with the HP and TQ that it puts out, it doesn't need another cam. It is a hyd roller cam. I've been told that yearone will answer any questions you have if you talk to one of their techs. I just haven't bothered calling them about it. I got all my research off of this and other forums from people actually using it.

DPM has a 383 that I'd love to have. 500 hp, 480 tq for $4995. I just can't justify the extra expense.
