In the last picture shouldn't the big end of the seal go on the shaft first?

Hi pete,
They seem to be indicating that the seal rolls over itself as the rod moves in and out. The rod doesn't slide through the seal, it rolls it.
That's what I think.
Regards,
Alan

Appears to be a conflict between two articles on corvettemagazine.com on how to install new actuator seals. Here are the photos from those articles showing the seal being installed:

The left photo is from the article linked to above in dannyman's post, the right photo is from this article:

http://www.corvettemagazine.com/body...both-open.html

Will someone who's done this repair please chime in an tell us which is correct?

Thanks!
Jerry

The one on the right is correct. Installing the seal as per the left photo would be impossible.

Don't know how to solve your dilemma. Zip, Willcox, & Corvette Central all show a single actuator set for all C3 years, including 1968, so I can just guess that the seal may have been redesigned at some point but the unit's form, fit & function remained the same for all years.

I would go ahead and install your new seals as shown in the RIGHT hand photo above, then test your actuators with your vacuum pump BEFORE reinstalling in your car. If the the rods move correctly and they hold vacuum in both the extended and retracted positions, you're good to go. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!
Jerry

I'd pay money to see a picture of that.

Here's a few pictures. I already started one headlight rebuild but have not touched the other.

Working on this one. I left the seal in place to prevent paint from getting in.

This is what I started with.

[IMG][/IMG]
Hopfully you can make out the seal in place.

I can sort of see it. Bubba has visited your car, please take the opportunity to install it correctly. Neither sealing surface will be located correctly with it in backwards.
