I'm still having problems and have yet to diagnose the problem. new rubber brake lines on their way. gonna change them this weekend. my thoughts are as follows:
brake line and or caliper(I hope it turns out to be this cause its CHEAP to fix)
differential grabbing or chattering(in my opinion the least likely due to the issue being on the drivers side only)
wheel bearing( the probable issue due to it being the MOST expensive to fix)
only starts after 30 or more minutes of driving. seems to do it more turning left. does it intermittently. slow speed turns to the left dont cause the sound. must stop to get the sound to reappear
thanks for all the advice and as soon as the problem is rectified i will post the results
I have a 77 and it does the same thing. I have checked all I can also. I had a mechanic check bearings, u joints, and anything else. Can't find anything. Sometimes it never does it and other times after the 20in drive it really sounds like the brake shoes grabbing. Maybe you can find an answer.
had an idea today,
thought i'd share it with everyone. I'm gonna drive my baby to work and by the time i get home the squeak\grinding should be back.
then i'm gonna pull the wheel off, unbolt the caliper and hang it(securely) from the body\frame and drive around the block (carefully).
if the sound is still there that would eliminate the brakes right?
if its gone then its the brakes and i can order new brakes!
MUHAHAHAHA!

I doubt its the caliper but if you do want to eliminate the caliper I would caution doing it the way you described. If you had to hit the brakes you would pop a piston and lose all rear braking.
You could just push 2 pistons in slightly and then clamp the rubber hose and drive the car.
Like Roger said, that method will create some work for you. Your brakes in the rear will be empty in short order.
I think I'd remove the fitting from the caliper and put a fitting and brass plug the seal the line.
I suspect you'll find a bearing issue in the end.
my intention was to clamp something between the pistons(wood as an example) but the idea to clamp the line was even better.
ok so this is what i did.
drove it till the noise appeared. coasted to a stop using no brakes then clamped the offending line with a pair of vise-gripes. no difference.
so today i'm gonna start looking at my options for bearing replacement.
I'd prefer to do it my self but my tools are limited.

come on the idea is not that bad. I would only need to do a couple start\stops less than 5mph. I also understand that if not restrained the pistons would pop out.
Also I live in a Very rural part of south AL so I'd only endanger myself and if I wreck and died there would be a fresh 78 to part out for my fellow forum members(discounts for everyone who didnt laugh at me) lol
