I have to drop my transmission and remember during the install having to put the shift tower on along with the dust cover and RTV while under the car and before it was lifted in place. I can't remember exactly why but it's in the instructions.
Can I just drop the trans without doing undoing all that? After removing the shift lever everything seems to be in the clear.
I have a removable cross member and just remove the shifter (and let it hang), nothing else from that part of the tranny.
I do have to lower the back of the engine a bit though.
My crossmember is also removable, what do you mean remove the shifter and let it hang? This is a Tremec, the shifter unbolts from the tower with 2 bolts
If the crossmember is removeable you just need to remove the handle. Pull it out and you will drop the rear of the trans a little and support the motor while removing the trans. No need to remove anything else. I have done this countless times. You are just left with the shifter stub. Lower this enough to clear the tunnel and you are home free.

That's what I'm talking about. I don't pull it out of it's hole in the tunnel, just let it hang.
On my car at least, the shifter has to come off, no big deal though. The motor has to be lowered so much for the shifter stub to clear the opening in the tunnel, the headers start to hit the tie rods. I think the valve covers were getting pretty close to the firewall to.
