Some 5 years ago I had the stock L48 rebuilt engine with DPFI L98 type injection and the original muncie 4 spd...and 336 gears....drove from Wash dlc. to Florida and back averaged 23-24 mpg cruising at 80 all the way, engine screaming....
SO when I added the new engine, for power, I went to a ZZ9 cammed 355, 4 bolt truck block, Edelbrock heads, headers, opened up L98 injection, whole thing hotrod style....and did a 700r4 at tsame time...hoping to keep mileage the same...well for the extra 100 some odd hp, I was NOT successful in keeping mileage the same....it went down to 20=21 mpg in freeway....sometimes 18 mpg....
since the engine is the same size, I"m surprised the camming differances would make that much more fuel burn....
BTW as a carb'd car, the thing got only 14 on the highway....12 around town
