The recircuting system found on many of these cars are perfectly capable of flowing proper fuel flow with an inline suction side filter. it seems these issues always come up and the inevitable comparison is a boat to a car!!....marine mills run mucho cooler than their auto counter parts which helps tremendously with vapor lock and usually there is a lot less distance from the pump to the tank which does make a difference for the suction side of the pump albeit very slight....bottom line is under heavy wot usage the mill can out run the fuel pump if there is slight restriction on the suction side as opposed to the pressure side.....marine mills incorporate water separators because of their enviornment and that most boats sit at dock as much or more than they are operated in very humid conditions
i did not mean to offend the op in any way, my apologies if i did, juz try'n to help out......

No apologys needed, Marine engines run at much higher rpms than most automotive for extended times. Current 5.7's run at 5,500, Current 6.0's run at 6,200. In the 80's and early 90's 5.7's ran at 4,600. This is a consistant run for hrs at WOT. Many fuel lines in small boats are very short, but in cruisers the fuel system may be 10 to 15 ft long.
I just did not want to install a filter if a OEM filter was present. Thanks Al

I have a Sierra marine fuel filter/water separator that I will install on my 72. It makes perfect sense on a car with a 40 year old tank and lines to filter the crude and water out. I don't know how water gets in there but it does.
It's a spin on type filter, like an oil filter, so I assume it would be installed on the vacuum side?
