Default need a new carb

Hey guys need a new carb on my 74. Its a 350 +.030 with the holley systemaxII kit installed yielding 10-1 com ratio. Holley recommends a 750 cfm carb. i was considering buying a summit racing street/strip carb cause of the price. I would like the one with mechanical secondary's due to the double pumper feature it offers. But summit recommends using it with a single plane intake and the holley systemax intake is a dual plane. Just wondering should i get one of these or a true holley double pumper.

I love my QF 750 downleg booster w/ mech secondaries. If ur car is an auto, get a carb w/ vac secondaries.

i bought a custom SMI quadajet for my 489 stroker. not a big fan of carbs but i am more than impressed with SMI. he will set it up for your engine. mine will idle at 650 rpm all day long and run without a hick up. mine is a 800 cfm with an electric choke. price is good also. do a search, that is how i found out about him.

Summit sells a clone of the Holley 4010 & 4011 series carbs at a low price but these carbs were discontinued by Holley for a reason...

I would concider one of Holley's Ultra Series carbs or a q-jet

most people go above and beyond on matching up internal engine components only to throw a one size fits all carb on it. unless you are going to have it professionally tuned on a dyno, save yourself some headache and buy a custom carb set up for your motor from whoever you trust.

I have the edelbrok 1407 750cfm "one size fits all" style carb on my 383 stroker and I REALLY dislike it. Ive had nothing but headaches getting the damn thing to dial in where I want it.

Have you had any experience with the Summit carbs? I havent.
I have heard that Holley eventually got those carbs to work OK, but by the time they figured it out nobody wanted one.
I am curious what kind of performance the Summit carbs are giving.

I got one of the summit double pumpers recently. Had a couple of clearance issues, that carb is a lot taller than I expected. Cant comment on performance still in the middle of a brake overhaul.

1st Problem was that it didnt clear the vacuum port on the intake manifold, the holly that was on the car before didnt come close to it!

2nd Hood Clearance, had to change to a drop base air cleaner.

My car has a th400 with 3000 stall converter and b&m shift kit. I have heard to get a carb with a vac secondary but not sure why. Whats the reason behind this?

kevin, i think you can send ur carb to SMI and he will set it up for you. i like fuel injection, but if u must have a carb, getting it set up right is pretty dang close to fuel injection. i took my eldy autozone carb off my 71 and let my friend use it on his 69 chevelle. it is a small cam'ed 350 with alot of vacumm. it works pretty good for him

If you have a 3000 stall you will be OK to run a double pumper.
If your converter was stock you could risk bogging the motor due to low air speed when you go WOT.
With the looser converter you'll be fine.

ok so your around the 400hp mark. you have a nice loose stall, i presume you have gears to suit so ABSOLUTELY Double Pump i say. A demon 750 or holley 4150 would be perfect for your set up. for stock auto,s yes i would say vacum secondary would be more friendly but your motor and combination is going to love that fuel going in on demand.

If i had just 1 dollar for every time i heard someone with vacum secondaries asking ."i dont know if my secondaries are opening "...i would be a rich man .

I like that saying G man..if you have a Q jet and can't feel the secondaries kickin in then they are not working..I think alot of us would be rich! Whatever you get dyno time should be in the budget..its almost free HP sitting there for you..you paid for it in all the parts and time..why not get all of it?
