This winter I want to go through my a/c system on my 78 in prep for summer driving and noticed that the black "putty" like stuff had fallen off the a/c line.
Can someone tell me exactly where that stuff goes and what it does? I recall hearing that Dr Rebuild sells it, but I was wondering what it actually did and where it went. Also, if I can not locate it, is there another acceptable way to accomplish what it does?
On my late '77, which I believe is the same as your '78, the line where the temp. sensing control has its sensor strapped is where the insulation goes. It keeps engine compartment heat from affecting the control. You can barely see it in this pic. in the lower right. Some of the vendors have it. Cork tape could also be used. mike...

That temp sensor is control for when and how often the A/C compressor cycles on and off depending on how cold the evaporator tube gets. One of the reasons that the Earlier A6 compressors made the cabin so cold is that the compressor ran continously with the A/C on versus cycling on and off for the later A4 compressors for fuel economy/compressor life etc. You can just use home pipe insulation material (Home Depot/Loews) on the sensor to the tube with a couple of cable ties if you are not interested in originality-it will work great!
