Need help choosing a cam for a new 406 build. I will race a little and street more. Would love to be around 500 hp. 72 c3 is a 4 speed and 3.36 gears.
I am going with a solid lifter flat tappet due to lack of funds! So far I have:
new scat cast crank
stock 817 block (two bolt)
bored .30 over
new 6" rods
new srp -16cc inverted dome pistons
block decked pistons .005 in the hole
planning on .038 head gasket (.043 quench)
Dart Iron Eagle platinum 215cc heads (64cc but cut to 60cc to get CR)
CR of about 10.6 to 1
arp main studs
Cam?????
Intake???
Carb?
I have a new retrofit hydraulic roller cam that would be perfect for you ,its a compcam extreme energy cam, 294/300 D ,540/562 ,110 LS part# 12-443-8 .very powerful cam ,it was sold but a guy on here could not get up the money,so im going to put it back up for sale.It is a very nice cam,im going to run one in my engine, its already in it.The cam is also small base circle cam for the stroker engines like yours.Let me know if your interested,im selling it for $175 ,over hundred dollars cheaper then new. Bill
P.S. cam will make over 500 hp
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Find some flat top pistons to get the compression up, milling the heads is nothing but trouble, you are looking at a cam in the 240 @ .050" and use 1.6:1 ratio rockers to to make some power
I'm interested but need to check with my engine builder.

OK let me know ,i put it up for sale in the parts section. You do know about the engine oil situation now, dont you?It would be worth making the engine a roller engine do to that most oils out there dont support flat tappet cams anymore, you will have to run an additive to your oil all the time and thats no guarentee that your cam wont wipe out, just a thought for you to think about. Everybody should change out the old flat tappet cams and go HR cam or solid roller.

I just bought the pistons. Flat tops with 64cc heads and a .038 head gasket (per SRP) will yield 11.7 to 1 cr. SRP #147549 (-16cc inverted dome) per SRP will yield 10.3 to 1 cr
Does anyone know of a 400 gasket thinner than .038? With the right cam 10.6 to 1 shouldn't be a problem hence this thread. My engine builder will recommend one I just wanted real world experience from the members here
I think you are going to have issues with the ratio you are going after and run pump gas 93 octane.
I agree, amazing the differance a flat top makes for that .155 bigger bore you are going to have over a 383. It took a while for my pistons to be delivered dished to keep me closer to 10;1 so I can run pump gas. Iron heads gonna add to your detonation issues as they run hotter than aluminum. Your cam will also have a big impact on compression.
edelbrock RPm air gap worth the $$$
