Didn't put 'Vette on the trickle charger 'til a few weeks ago, went to take her out for a spin today and no start, jumpstarted with my jeep and it would crank, could hear starter turn but no start..
Battery or flywheel need to spin, stuck from sitting, roll car backward a few feet?
IF! it turns over AND gets fire at the plug, Then get some starting spray and shoot it down the carb throat. This will fire the engine and allow the fuel pump to catch up.
Unfortunately doesn't turn over, starter just spins..all signs from my reading on here sound like time for a new battery, it's about 4 years old and car sits more of the time in a cold garage..

It could be the starter is not engaging with the ring gear or the ring gear could be striped, pull the tin pan under the transmission and see what going on.
auto or stick? is the motor frozen or can you turn it over by hand?
What you are are probably hearing is the bendix spinning and not engaging the flywheel. Try tapping the starter with a wrench or small hammer a few times to free it up.
the solenoid is engaging, the starter is spinning but the bendix is not pulling the pinion gear into the flywheel.
probably need to pull the starter and have it checked out.
If I remember right the solenoid must go full travel to spin the starter which should mean the bendix lever has moved ,,, bendix lever broken ??? bendix bad ???
If the bendix is stuck or frozen to the shaft I don't think the starter armature will spin.
Just thinking out loud.
