Default 1968 vette L88 engine found

Hi

I friend of mine bougt a couple of corvette engines some years ago. 2 1966 427s, some 454s, and this 1968 L88.

As you can see in the pics it have the suffix IT , but we cant find any vin number on the pad, cant understand this?

This engine has been raced here in this country for a long time, so I dont think someone restamped the block.

The engine has the correct heads, cam, intake, carb and the special transistior ignition.

What do you think about the vin?

Thanks

Over The counter. There were thousands of these sold OTC for drag racing. They were also installed in many manufacturers of HP boats. There were only hundreds originally installed in corvettes and many were blown up or decked. Very rare to find an original that is rebuildable with the vin stamp..

This was my experience buying Chevrolet high performance engines the 66-67 engines were stamped with there production 'suffix only without a vin number. And were probably stored in the Flint warehouse and sent out as needed for a ordered Vette.... and only then if it was designated to a particular car the vin would be stamped...the over the counter engines lacked only the vin but everything else was stamped....I believe the CE engines were at first for dealer warranty and may have become over the counter at a later date. Could have been 1969

Does all the corvette motors has the vin stamped on the pad?

Or can it be stamped on the "pad" beside the oilfilter?

Nope. Only those engines replaced under warranty got the CE stamp.
