have 80 which was restored 1990. engine bored .30. lunti cam and lifter with roller rockers. b & m transpak.
the question i have is the tranny does not shift easly when slowing down from 2nd to 1st. the engine lugs badly. if i feather the gas it slips right in. i had it looked at by a mech who spec in vets. he said to solve it would have to rebuilt at tranny shop.
in the mean time he pulled a elec connector on side of trans that he said controlled the torque convertor. the problem was 90% solved.
am i doing any damage to tranny with convetor dissconnected?? should i have it rebuilt???
Leaving that connector unconnected wont hurt anything except your fuel mileage.
But since the problem is corrected by unhooking that connector, the problem may not be in the transmission at all.
You may want to have someone else look at the car. It could just be the vacuum switch that signals the converter to lock up that is bad.
I am not a trans expert, but my 80 TH350c works perfect. I also have the B&M trans pac, in the street/strip mode. The switch is on the firewall as stated, between the wipermotor, and the brake booster. The signal wire (that you have unplugged) will not allow lock-up, now. If it is smoother downshifting now, It sounds like a sticking convertor clutch in the convertor itself, or the valve body portion for this feature. This valve body was added in the 80 trans and is seperate from the main valve body, at the front of the trans. A trans expert might be needed to troubleshoot your problem? Good luck.
