Default Valve lash?

I will be attemting to adjust my valve lash on my 77 wednesday. I have "Lars" write up on it. Will I be able to turn the motor with a nice wrench on the harm. balancer nut? (battery/coil disconneted of course) Or will I need to take the plugs out so there will not be any compression? Thanks...

I just did mine the other day. With plugs out it will turn over much easier. I did mine with them in. Just make sure to turn the motor over the correct way as not to loosen Bolt on the balancer.

I was able to turn my motor over with a wrench on the alternator pulley nut with plugs in without any problems.

This is the easiest, even works on large diesel engines.

Default A little more to it than listining for clatter.

What u want is to get to zero lash then adjust 1/4 to 3/4 turn tight. Zero lash is where the p-rod can still turn sideways but doesn't move up or down anymore - yes u can do this with your fingers. Best method i know is to cut open the top of an old vlv cover and swap it on the head - this will reduce oil splash the most. Once the engine is warm and idling loosen the rocker until u can move the p-rod up and down (may clatter now). Next tighten until p-rod won't move up or down but u can still roll it side to side with your fingers - this is zero lash. Now tighten 1/4 to 3/4 turn tight and move on to the next rocker.

This is much more accurate than when the engine is stopped and the lifters may not even be pumped up with oil.

Good luck in Palm Beach,
