Default 68 427 Distributor tach drive issue

I was replacing the distributor main shaft since it was stripped pretty good where the tach drive gears connect. After main shaft installed, I was putting a new tach gear drive in since old one was damaged. The aftermarket tach gear drives are all flat brass on the end that goes into the distributor, but my original one has a hole in the center that goes on a steel "prong" that is inside the distributor. Several vendors I have talked with have no idea about this "prong". The replacement tach gear drives will not go in far enough because they do not have this hole. Anyone else have this issue and any ideas other than drilling a hole in the tach drive would be appreciated. Thanks. The distributor is original and is part number 1111293.

I've learned that maybe this "prong" was not suppose to be there and is there because the end of the tech gear (which has a hole in the center) was rubbing against the distributor and created the groves/prong?

Correct on the assumption, you can machine the inside to accept a steel insert and it will remain undetectable from the outside or drill out the very center and install the brass button. Either way you need to do something
