My car has an Accel Supercoil and a Mallory Unilite distributor. Sometimes it starts a little hard, compared to my '74 Monte Carlo with stock HEI and coil, that fires the second you touch the key every time. I measured the voltage going into the coil on the 'Vette and read 4.8volts. Shouldn't this be more like 10-12? I have no idea. Plugs are always nice and tan. Appreciate any help. Also, Do I need to be running a ballast resistor? Thanks again.
You need atleast 10 volts to fire it properly. You'd better check your power source to see where the problems are. You must have a dirty conection somewhere. :seeya
When I got that 4.8 volt reading it was key on/engine off. According to Mallory, I need to check the running voltage, but I haven't done it yet because I got kicked out of the garage this weekend while my wife prepares for a yard sale, and I don't want to open my hood outside now because it's raining(what's new?). I'll reply when I gat a running reading.

It sounds like you already have a ballast resistor in place...and yeah you need to have it running cause continuously charging the coil will drain the battery fast. Since I've got an HEI I can't help you with the location of a ballast resistor; though, I think they get mounted on the intake manifold near the distributor. I also can't do anything about your wife's yard sale. Next time I'm through Oregon we need to hook up.
Rockn-Roll,
Yeah, I think I have a factory type inline resistor in the wire to the coil from the starter. It looks almost like a splice, and it gets hot when the motor is running. Definately let me know when you're coming through this way.
