Default engine swap

I know some of you have swapped out engines with turn-key crate engines. will a 350/290hp or 350/330hp gm turn-key crate engine fit into a 71 vette 350/270hp, automatic with A/C without any interference. Like hood clearance, water pump, balancer etc..........
thanks Mike

The basic engines are the same. The only hood clearence issue you might have is if you use a "taller" intake manifold, or air cleaner. If you use your current intake, carb and aircleaner, you won't have any problem.

The newer engines use a smaller bolt circle flywheel/flexlplate due to the once piece rear seal design; 3" vs 3-5/8" if memory serves. Most of the GM long block engines do come with a flexplate though.

Some of the crate engines come with a long snout water pump so you may need to get a short one.
Had to get a short one for my ZZ4 in my 70.

I'm not sure about the current 350's, but a lot of the GM Performance Parts crate engines (such as the 502's), no longer have provision for a mechanical fuel pump.

Hi Mike,
Many people think it's a good idea to hang on to the old engine and any parts you don't use.
Someday, if the car goes to a new owner the old engine and parts might be a + in the sale.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Alan, you're exactly right, thats is my plan my reasoning for buying the turn-key engine, Hopefully the 350/330hp vortec engine will fit under my hood. I will overhaul my engine at some point but haven't time this year. Its hell to be retired "so many things to do, so many places to see".thanks
Mike
