Removed my cam ,intake and heads a month or so ago to install ededbrock performer package. After installing cam noticed the block was machined for a locking plate, thrust washer, whatever they are called to limit cam movement.Looking through all my parts and tearing my garage apart many times,I can't find or even remember seeing this part.My question is did they use this part on my motor?did i lose it?did bubba forget to put it back on? My block is a 75 454 unstamped factory replacement motor. It says( ss-perf.)on block behind timeing cover.thanks for any help. geno
It is a Torrington bearing you are refering to.It must be reinstalled now that the block has been machined for it.This is done to prevent damage to the block when running a Solid roller cam or for a repair to the facing that has been damaged due to cam walk
all BB chevys have 2 tapped holes in the front of the cam bore, these were for the 2 gear drive cam that chevy sold as a over the counter cam kit. chain drive non roller cams do not need this thrust bearing. :chevy
It asolutely does have to have the bearing if it has been machined for it.Question is,has it been machined????????????.Bolts holes or no bolt holes, that part is irrelavant.
Thanks for your help guys.I did not have it machined,as far as i know the cam i removed was virgin ,(nylon gear).Noticed the two tapped holes and got nervous. So my two brothers and i drank a 30-pack and three hours time looking for something that may not exist........now thats quality time..
when you install a torrington thrust bearing you machine the back side of the cam gear not the block. if the face of the block is worn you machine it to a depth of what ever spacer are available for this repair. i have a special cutter that uses the cam bore bearing to run on and a milling cutter to face the front of the block using a 1/2" power drill. i think the spacer come in .030 thickness and are available from cloyes. the best way to prevent the block from wearing is to drill a .032 hole into the block face where the oil gallery come up to the cam bearing and this way you will have pressureized oil to lube the back side of the the cam gear. :chevy
