I bought new mounts and the mount remover tool and did the work yesterday. The remover tool was great and required little effort. I think it was worth the $15.

Too late for my reply, but just in case someone else needs this info, if you use the pipe cap or proper removal tool make sure that they are screwed on to the shock mount threads as far as they will go and the chances of damaging the threads will be greatly reduced...

i sprayed mine with liquid wrench and used a punch and a hammer. the punch was thin enough to set in the middle of the bolt (knurled shaft) and not ruin the threads and slide right out when hit. piece of cake.
