Default Speedo cable replacement

How hard is it to replace the cable? My biggest concern is threading it through the firewall, there's a lot of stuff in the way behind the dash pad. I'm taking it in to have the instrument lights looked at this week so I may get them to do it if necessary.

I replaced mine last year, and the hardest part for me was reaching up under the dash and disconnecting it from the speedometer and reconnecting the new one. I have an 81 and I found the easiest way for me to work under there was to remove the drivers seat, a section of the dash below the steering wheel and the heater duct on that side(it just snaps in). Laying on my back on the floor, using a screwdriver, to push the spring clip to release the cable, I pulled it out of the speedo. It pulled out through the grommet in the firewall pretty easily. To get the new cable through the grommet I had to cut a couple of slits so the hole would open enough for the connector. Reconnect by just pushing the cable into the speedometer. I have a 4-speed with no cruise control so I have a 1 piece cable. I ran the cable up from under the car and over the bellhousing before I ran it through the firewall. If you have cruise you have a 2 piece cable.

If you don't mind working up under the dash it's not that hard.

I just remembered... I had the speedo out once before. The odometer worked before I took it off, now it doesn't. Did I break something?
Tough call on installing myself, I have a torn rotator cuff. Doesn't bother me much normally, but this sound like the kind of thing that will really aggrevate it.

My 79 does not have the clip on the back of the speedometer. I have replaced mine a few times, and I think the gear in the transmission is bad because it keeps eating up my speedometer gear. Check the cable, it may have touched a header and melted. Another thing that went bad on mine was the cruise control so I had to get a new cruise control for it also.

I got it on. Wasn't that hard. I bought a 1 piece cable from autozone for $11. I had to pull the manifold pipe to get to the bottom end. Thanks for the input everyone

The original AC Delco cables are still available. About $50.00

What was the part number on the cable you used. I believe my cruise control unit is bad and i want to bypass it.
