I'm pretty sure that some here have opened up their original clock, cleaned & oiled it, and had it work fine.
The previous owner installed a quartz movement in mine (not too difficult from what I've heard) and it's worked great for the almost 8 years I've had the car.
You can do either. If you elect to open it up and clean/lubricate it you may or may not get lucky. If it does work somewhere down the road you're going to have to do the same thing again. If you go through the trouble of taking the clock out and opening it up you might as well replace the guts with a quartz movement. I did it to mine and it's kept perfect time for 2 years now. You can also get quartz replacement clocks if you're squeamish about taking yours apart. Most of the major suppliers have the clocks and the conversion kits.
Hi
I did fix my 68 clock last winter. As already mentioned, it only needed oiling.
Runs a bit fast now, about 10 min per day. Too much oil ?
I also insulated the clock completely from ground and run a direct wire from the battery , this because I disconnect the ground of the battery every time , I shut down the engine. For theft and safety reason.
Works now already for 4 month. Will see if it stays ok.
I agree, lots of work to get it out. Might be worse installing a quartz kit.
Good luck Gunther :seeya
Another option: There is a guy that has an ad in most of the Corvette magazines.....'Clocks by Roger'. He is in Jackson, TN. He will take your old clock and either repair it or put in a quartz movement. Don't know the $$. Just my .02.

I love this subject. Always good for a few laughs!!!
I'm proud to say that my original clock is still working accurately. Not sure why. Maybe because it gets to rest 6 months out of the year when she goes into winter hibernation. I'm guessing that time will catch up with it. Sorry for that horrible pun.
If you click on the link just under my sig. i have set up instructions for replacing the movemnent in your clock witha quartz movement. It really isn't a bad job to do.
Just put in a qaurtz cpnversion from Doc Rebuild and clock works great. Someone earlier said it right: if you're taking the time to remove the clock, either replace it or upgrade with a quartz conversion.
