Default C3 steering column question.

Is a tilt telascopic steering column out of a 1978 the same for 78 79 80 81 82? If not which ones are the same (interchangeable) and if not what are the differences? Thank you for your help. Tom b

1978 through 1982 should all interchange. There may be a few minor differences. Angle of the dimmer pivot where the turn signal lever plugs in would be one difference.

I can't speak for the 1984 through 1992 steering wheels. But here is what I have found on replacing the standard column steering wheels with earlier ones.

Replacing Steering Wheel with Integral Hub - Standard Column - 1976 through 1979

It appears that the 1976 standard steering wheel with the integral hub was used on all standard steering columns from 1976 through 1979. (T&T was the only steering column available after 1979.)

I have found that Eckler’s advertises a steering wheel adapter hub, horn button, a generic emblem, and an adapter cover (A6995) and adapter rings (A6996P-polished or A6996B-black) to adapt 1963 to 1982 Corvette steering wheels to these standard columns.

There may be other suppliers that have similar kits but I haven't found them.

HI Jim,

Looks like Ecklers doesn't have these parts anymore. I'll try calling them.

This the steering wheel hub that Zip Products lists as being for the 1969-75 Corvette standard steering column.
http://www.zip-corvette.com/ProductDetails/ProductDetails.aspx?pid={c9af8047-2b66-451b-b7f3-5a89537c369c}&gid={3a66b780-1b60-4461-a58b-11c02c25428e}&GroupName=Steering+Wheel+% 26+Hub&pname=69-75+STD+Steering+Column+Hub&Referer=&Alia s=&ptct=SGR-SR&CTitle=&
Just copy and paste this small address to look at the part.

I checked both the 1975 standard column (the actual 1976 standard column is identical to the 1975 column) and I also checked the 1977 standard column.

The steering shaft diameter is identical between the two columns.
The turn signal housing diameter is nearly identical (4.04 versus 4.11 for the 1977)
The gage dimension for the taper to the end of the strg shaft is identical.
The actual gage diameter (0.746) between the two columns is identical.
The dimension from the gage point to the turn signal housing is identical.

The only difference I can find between the 1975 standard column and the 1977-79 standard columns is the following. There is a metal cover that goes over the toothed locking plate on both columns but it is not dimensioned as to how much it might stick up past the turn signal switch housing. The cover is smaller than the turn signal housing diameter but does stick up a small amount above the edge of the housing. I am sure that the hub advertised by Zip would have a lip that matched the housing diameter (remember the housing diameters are within 0.07 of each other) but would most probably have a small undercut on the inside diameter of the hub to clear the cover. I don't have a drawing or a picture of the underside of the Zip hub to judge that the cover would fit or not.

My best guess would be that it will fit. I would think that you could order the hub and if it interfered with the cover you could try removing the cover to see if the hub would fit. Or just return the hub if it really wouldn't fit because of intereference with the locking plate/cover.

If the hub fits, then all sorts of steering wheels will fit your standard column.

Wow nice. I'll be pulling the steering column out this winter for another project (putting in a T5) so maybe I'll buy this hub and give it a try.

Thanks, I'll let you know if it works for me.
