speedometer rubbing?

speedometer rubbing?
So there is a wierd rubbing noise coming from my driver area when I am in motion, I have isolated it to be coming from the speedometer. Should I try to put graphite in the speedometer cable to lubricate it? I do I do that?

It is most likely the speedo cable rubbing inside its jacket. That is a sign of the last throes of life for that cable. At that point of wear, it is putting a lot of stress on the speedo mechanism and the speedo can throw craps, too. Best to disconnect the speedo cable at the tranny until you can get a new cable. It still could be the speedo itself, but the odds are with the cable.

I agree it is probably the cable. I tried lubricating mine and it started rubbing again after a couple of months, so I had to replace it. Unless you are a fanatic about originality I would just put in a new one. It's not expensive, especially if you use a generic one, and you will only have to do the job once.

The inside of the casing is worn out. You can purchase a speedometer lubricating tool/adapter for use with a hand grease gun, but you're better off to replace the cable. Has your speedometer needle started bouncing yet?
