Default Pre-oiling valve gear

Do I need to use a distributer shaft (with the gear ground off) or can I do it with a thin rod with a tab welded on the end? Just asking because I heard that the distributer shaft blocks off an oilway which would otherwise let the oil return to the sump b4 getting to the heads.
Thanks
Paul

You must use a distributor housing. It does in fact complete the right hand oil gallery. Otherwise the oil just runs into the sump. I bought a used one, machined off the gear and the top and attach a 1/2" drill motor to it. You'll be amazed at the torque required to turm the pump.

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about the torque needed - I tried using the thin rod yesterday (at low speed) & after about 30secs smoke started pouring out of the drill!!! So, once I get a better drill, is there any way I could fabricate a spacer/sleeve/whatever to block the oilways (distributers aren't that easy to find here)?

I have an old modified distributor and borrow a heavy duty drill from work.

If you have access to a lathe you could fabricate one easily. Otherwise it will be tough. How soon do you need one? I have one I'll ship to you for free! If you have the time to wait.

Check the tools section of ebay motors. You can get a small block Chevy pre-oiler attachment for about $15 - 20. I see them on there all the time.

Kingt,
Thanks very much for the offer - that's really good of you! I do have a small lathe (the reason that I can't keep my Vette at home is mainly due to the lathe being in the way), but as of yesterday, I'm in a rush to get the car running again - the painter doing a few bits for me has a "window" & likes the car so much that he has offered to do the entire front & back of it for about $650!!!!! If he has enough time he wants to do the doors as well (C3's have that effect on people over here :) ). There's got to be a catch, a complete re-spray for that price? I'll probably be watching drag racing on the TV at some time & see my Vette blasting down the track at Santa Pod
So, I'm suddenly in a mad panic to get the thing running again. I'll see if any of the Vette specialists over here would be willing to lend/hire me an old modified dist. Failing that I'll buy some alloy bar stock & make something up (the only metal I have of the correct size is stainless - no way will I use that, it costs a small fortune & will take hours to turn down!).
Once again, thanks for the offer,
Paul
