Anyone know if the lips seals can be put in wrong, any pics. One way does not fit at all. The other goes in real tight but makes it in without tearing. Thanks.
Hi ds,
Yes they can be put in backwards.
The seal needs to be installed in the direction that allows the pressure of the fluid to expand the lip against the wall of the caliper bore so the seal is increased as the pressure is increased.
If you think of the lip as a flap... the free end of the flap faces the fluid.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
Lubricate the seals and the bore with fresh brake before assembling, and use something like a popsicle stick to gently work the edge of the seal into the bore. If you just jam the piston in you will either fold the lip over or tear it.
I like your idea of the popsicle or other blunt object that can gently press the seal down. It is a tight fit.
I am doing a similar brake job and am planning on using an old feeler gauge with paperthin shims. I think this is thin enough that it will allow me to insert it between the pliable seal and the sleeve allowing me to move the seal down into position.
The brake fluid coating the walls and the seal should also help it slide into position.
