I can't get the damn thing to idle! It wasn't running so great before I took it off. There was a bunch of rust in my fuel line so I replaced everything including tank. Put one of Lars' carbs on and it ran like a champ. So I cleaned up my Speed Demon 650 and put it back together. I put it back on and I can't get it to idle. It just dies. I can constantly blip the throttle and it seems to run fine above about 2500 rpm's but when it drops below 2500 it just dies. I've put the mixture screws back to stock positions with no luck. I've adjusted the primary and secondary idle screws until I'm literally blue in the face :mad :mad :mad !!!
Anybody know what this means or what I should do???
LARS, if you're reading this I'm just about mad enough to just send it to you and see if you can get it tuned (I'm sure you can). I've got one of your loaner carbs already and if there's not too much of a demand for the one I've got maybe I could keep while you work on mine? Or maybe you have another one that would work.
Check for vacuum leaks. What kind of intake are you using. You may have to get a plate to cover the spreadbore voids. Edelbrock sells one. I think it's about $6.
I think it 's your gasket under the carb. I had this happen one time. Was going to change to a thicker gasket and it wouldn't run. The gasket serves two fuctions on a Demon. One is that it is a gasket, two it closes off some of the vac of the carb. One have to have the right gasket next to the carb to close off these passesges.
Re: Frustrated with carburetor!!!!! (Steve Adkins)
Changing the gasket is no problem but why does it run fine with the Holley and not with the Demon? And the Demon didn't have these problems before. It wasn't running perfect but it was nowhere near this bad.
It sounds like the carb's idle system is not functioning. I had this same problem with a 2BBL carb in my other car. I took it apart and did a complete overhaul, but had the same problem. I finally figured that there was some contaimination in the idle system passageways, or perhaps even a crack in the body preventing vacuum from drawing fuel properly. Whatever the problem was I chucked the carb into the garbage and pulled one out of the junkyards...stuck it on and it's been running fine for years.
