Just don't let it roll around in the back of your truck and the likes! :)
Don't worry about lint ect,the shop will remove it for you and yeah,if you have an old blanket it would not hurt. Many times a crank can just be micropolished, checked for straight ect and it is a done deal.If damage in the dissassembly process or the thing just flat had a bunch of wear due internal lets call them abrasives  floating around in the motors prior life might have to be turned.Leave that part up to the shop
What kinda crank is it? ya building something to go fast? ;)

Re: Wrap the crank up?? (bigvette1)
Only one caution ----- don't drop it on your toes. :mad
make sure your fingers are not under it when you set it down ---
either spray with WD40 or some other type of lube that will stay in place to keep it from "flash rusting". Protect the journals from nicks and dings ....
I always have a bottle of the engine oil that I will be using sitting around for this reason...I dip my finger in the oil and smear it everywhere on the crank to keep it from rusting...and for taking it to the shop I use a large plastic bag, or if necessary wrap it with plastic wrap like Glad Wrap and the like. Lint is nasty stuff and you definitely don't want any getting on your crank. And a shop isn't going to clean your crank up if all it's going to do is measure it for wear...they only clean up parts to some extent if they are doing some work on it, though when my cranks don't measure up (I have my own dial guage vernial caliper) I just exchange it for a unit that has already been magnafluxed and reground that way I have a crank ready to go and can get the engine back taken apart and back together in about three days. The only time it takes longer is when I have my heads machined...which could take two days.
