Long time classic car owner, but still a Corvette newby..... 74 Coupe, 454, Turbo-hydramatic. How can I EASILY determine whether I have the 153-tooth or 168-tooth flywheel?

Remove the inspection cover and count the teeth in a 90 degree segment of the flywheel...then multiply by 4.

The old adage still holds true: "To assume, makes an *** out of u and me..." If you want to know for sure, you have to actually look at it.

Starter nose cones with staggered mounting bolt pattern are for the 168, straight pattern is for the 153.
Your 454 should have a 168 tooth flexplate (not flywheel), but noone knows who's been there before so I suggest you follow 7T1vette's suggestion, remove the converter cover and count

Is there a size/diameter difference between the various flywheels?(153, 168, etc) I have a flywheel cover on my 350cu engine with the TH400 tranny, and I have to shim the cover 1/4" at he tranny to clear the flywheel.
No big deal but it doesn't seem normal.

454 and 350`s use the same starter with 168 tooth flywheel, and a staggered aluminum nose starter.....if its a 70 or later and a turbo....
