I have what appears to be a 10 leaf, 2 1/2" wide rear spring on my '76. It rides like a truck, no bounce at all in the rear (skip the "junk in the trunk" jokes) ha-ha. With 8" bolts, it measures 29" to the rear fender opening. It seems that when the PO switched to a later spring, he must have added a leaf for some reason. If I just want to remove a leaf, do I remove the top one, which is only about 8" long?? I know that switching to a fiberglass spring might help the ride, but I've read lots of ride height issues with glass springs. Any ideas?
I added a leaf to my 9 leaf years ago. the added leaf is generally the second one from the bottom. If it was rebanded or rivited your kinded of screwed. Mine was also rearched.
I've had good luck with rear mono springs with the stock length bolts. The low rider look just takes longer bolts
Removing a leaf, especially that little one on the top, isn't going to make any difference in the ride comfort. You should investigate the various springs that are out there, both metal and plastic, and pick a spring rate that will give you the comfort you want. There's lots of experience on this forum with rear spring rates. And look into shocks as well, they have a lot to do with ride comfort. Don't sweat the ride height, that can be adjusted with the bolts.
63 - 82 had 7 or 9 leaf spring. Everything I see 78 had 9. My 78 originally had 7. The vendors said it should have had 9. The spring was week and so replaced with 9.
