Default Wiper door hits new windshield. Help

I just had a glass company install a new windshield on my 69. as i was putting the wiper door back together i found that it doesn't close before it hits the windshield. it probably only needs 1/4 inch or so but it doesn't close. i assume the gap between the wiper door and the windhsield should be more like 1/2 inch or so. the windshield looks like it might be sitting high, around 3/8" off the windshield frame.

Does anyone have experience with this? Advice is much appreciated.

Yes.. more than I wanted too!

The installer may have put to much urethane under the glass. The best way to tell is to look at the way the pillar moldings fit. Are they snap tight against the windshield? Or is there about a 1/16" gap.

You may try re-adjusting the door as well.

Hi bf,
While I agree with Willcox, what are the gaps between the wiper-door and wiper-grill, and wiper-grill and hood like?
Also how does the ss header and ss a-pillar trim fit?
When things are lined up and the door is closed properly there's a VERY small gap between the wiper-door and glass. The AIM calls for .08" -.12"... less than 1/8th inch.
Regards,
Alan

With the pillar trim on, i can't slide a dollar bill between it and the windshield. Should there be much of a gap under the trim?

Alan. the wiper door, grill, and hood gaps are all down as narrow as they will go. Probably 50 thou between them all. if i could get the wiper door to close, i could slide the grill towards the windshield a little like i want.

If I am thinking correct, the grill can be adjusted but i can't really adjust the wiper door front and back much.

Hi bf,
There shouldn't be any gap between the glass and the header and a-pillar trim.
What was taken off or moved to install the windshield?
If the gaps between the hood/grill and grill/door are minimal, then it pretty well has to be the glass. Did the installer have any trouble getting the a-pillar trim back on?
Does there seem to be a large gap between the bottom edge of the glass and the cowl/birdcage?
The adjusting screws at the rear corners of the door mechanism do have an effect on how the door is tipped and how far back it moves when closed.
Regards,
Alan

This is the cowl/glass gap on my 71.

This is the adjusting screw I mentioned.

All the trim was off the car before they put the glass in because I am assembling a project car that had no windshield when I purchased it. I mocked up the trim before the windshield was in and everything looked alright.

The outside of the windshield sits .5-.550 inches above the birdcage along the bottom of the winshield. I couldn't get an extremely accurate measurment of the thickness of the windshield, but it looked to be around .200" thick. that means there is around or over 5/16 of goop. I'm not sure if that is too much, but a winshield sitting over half an inch above the birdcage looks too tall!!

The 5/16" thick is correct so I'm perplexed unless the glass is too thick. This defies all logic with me since the newer windshields are actually thinner than the original ones. When we install new windshields with urethane, we use 5/16" spacers under the glass to make sure we get the correct set height. We do this by using cut off sections of the original window tape which comes in 5/16" thickness.

You might just need to adjust the linkage and go with it.

Hi bf,
Again I agree with Wilcox. The glass doesn't SOUND too far from the birdcage.
Has the front clip ever been replaced?
Here's a thought. Is the piece of painted ss trim pushed all the way into the clips on the cast part of the wiper door?
Do the small pieces of ss trim on the top/rear of the fenders fit?
Here's a picture of the gap between the glass and a-pillar about half-way up the a-pillar. Does your dimension look about the same?
Regards,
Alan
