So the original Q-Jet on the car was in bad shape, and the car ran horrible. No adjustments, leaking, inop choke...I could go on. So a buddy offered me another Q-jet said it was the same, yada yada. I installed on the car, and it did run great. However the stock air cleaner (75) does not fit on this Q-Jet model.
So I have a few questions. Summit offers the Holley rebuilt Q-Jet direct replacement. Will this run ok? I have heard of issues.
Beyond the summit offered carb, would you have any suggestions for a different mfg. replacement carb. If you do offer up another model, I assume that the stock air cleaner assembly will not work. Would you please offer up a suggested air cleaner assembly, if stock will not work.
75 Corvette L-48 Automatic, with a stock hood. Obviously I am not making great power, however the engine does run very good. I do like the looks of the stock air cleaner. The engine in the next year or so is going to be replaced.
I should have mentioned that the original carb on the car had some physical damage as well. Cracked mounting points, I am not interested in rebuilding.
I had a Holley rebuilt QJet on my '70 for awhile; when it started running crappy after about 20k miles I took it apart and found that the power piston end had been snipped off with a pair of cutting pliers...I wouldn't recommend them.
Thats the same issue I read about while doing a search here on the Holley rebuilt Q-Jet carbs. The original thread I read though was from 2002, so maybe things have changed for the better.
The other Q-Jet, I put on has the fuel inlet in a diiferent location. That issue caused me to have to use a rubber supply hose. I don't want that as a permanent solution. So the different fuel inlet location, and the original air cleaner assembly not fitting are the 2 reasons I want to change it out.
If the Holley rebuilt Q-Jets quality have improved I would be open to trying though.
I noticed you're up in WA so you might not want to do biz with anybody too far away...at any rate I had my most recent QJet done by "Carbs Unlimited" in L.A.; they fished up a numbers-matching carb for my '70 and did an absolutely gorgeous jewel-like job rebuilding it. It works beautifully and looks so pretty that I'm almost ashamed to have it on top of my motor...I think I paid them around $360 WITHOUT a core. My previous QJet had been damaged by over-tightening the two front mounting bolts which warped the airhorn assembly and caused internal bleeding and generally schizophrenic behavior. Whatever you do decide to go with be very careful not to do this, it'll ruin an otherwise good carb...
I checked out the SMI Website. The Quadrajet listed on the site as p/n 335001 would seem to be what I am looking for. As mentioned in my post the Quadrajet currently on my 75 required me to use a rubber hose to the Carb fuel inlet, and the stock air cleaner assembly will not fit.
As I am currently out of state for 1 more week, I don't have my car to look at, to use as a reference. I am hoping someone with more knowledge than I, could have an answer if the stock air cleaner assembly will fit on the 335001 carb, and if this carb has the same fuel inlet location as the stock carb had from the factory.
Again, thanks for your help guys it is much appreciated,
Jeff
I just ordered a carb from SMI and am waiting to put it on. My neighbor came over and looked at it and thought it was brand new, it is that clean.
I opted for the Q-Jet because I did not want to deal with changing out linkages, fitment issues, connections etc. Sounds like that is similar to what you want.
Zero fitment issues is exactly what I'm looking for in a replacement quadrajet. I have e-mailed SMI asking questions as to the fitment of p/n 335001 they offer. As mentioned the replacement quadrajet I have on the car runs well but doesn't allow use of the stock 75 air cleaner, among other things. I'm not currently at home to compare the pics with my car, and I haven't heard back from SMI yet. Want to replace it soon.
