Default Fuel Filter Clog/Stale Gas?

My '71 350 had been bogging badly at WOT at higher RPMs. Checking the easy stuff first, pulled the fuel filter to find it clogged with "goopy white gunk." Sock in fuel tank appears ok from above (haven't actually pulled it out of the tank yet). Could the gunk be from old/bad gas? The car did sit from about November to February with the same tank of gas (and no Sta-Bil added to it ).

Todays modern gas has a shelf life of about 3-6 months depending on a few different things. It will begin to 'varnish' anywhere from 6 months on. Being that the gas was only roughly 4 months old there would be minimal varnish in the filter. No where near enough to see white goupy stuff as you say. So I doubt it's the gas.

Maybe someone else will chime in with their idea of what it might be.

I wouldn't worry about what it is..or what I think it is..I would just replace the filter and add the stabil for ethanol in the gas with a few more gallons of gas..don't top it off..try to run high octane stuff like turbo blue..a couple of gallons of that also..run only a little gas at a time..try to burn up the tank of gas that's in there before you fill it up all the way..you want to make sure the carb didn't get infected also..it can be a leaky pita but change the filter in the carb also..maybe get some good fuel cleaner after this tank is gone like the BG 44k..then make sure you add something in the tank when you store it..or if it gets real humid outside..I like that stabil for ethanol..but there are many more out there..I put that in mine last November and mine runs fine so far this year..and btw..once you run that turbo blue you will want to run it all the time..I love that stuff..

I can't get Turbo Blue fuel here but one of the Richmond, va metro speed shops, Paradise, offers race gas at 100 octane. I put 2.5 gallons in and it didn't seem to do that much more for the 93 octane already in there and at $7.85 a gallon it was a bit pricey.
