Ok when I bought my car the console was just sitting in place it was split so I bought a new one .In the mean time I dyed everything ,new carpet , door panels ,put the carpet in the back ,,so I went to put the console back in the car and it wont go in all the way I dont want to force it back in place and break my new console or the dash panels So I thought maybe I missed something when I put the dash and the panels back in .I dissasembled the whole dash again ,panels, dash, center console everything it was all tight when I took it out , so I put it all together again dash clips were in place everything tight as a drum went to put the console back in and still it wont go back in this is driving me crazy and i am about to burn the car to the ground ,, It appears that the console is about 1 1/2inches from the side mounting plate and it has to go up a inch .I measured the copnsole its the same as the old one I even took the mounting plate off the console and that wasent it either,,my only thought is that the panels are warped so bad that It wont allow the console to get in there any sugestions would be helpful sorry for the rant but I had enough already

Hi f,
What year are you working on?
For the early 70 cars that I'm familiar with the shifter console needs to be in place, with the screws loosely installed, before the dash pads and center gauge bezel are installed. I also make sure the emergency brake console will fit too, before tightening ANY of the dash or console screws.
Perhaps your sequence is the cause of the fit trouble?
Regards,
Alan

Hey, it's OK that the console was installed small-end forward. We all understand that, sometimes it just doesn't go our way.

P.S. glad you found the problem and....we don't want to know...

That wasn't so bad, at least you figured it out, good job. Looking forward to seeing pics of the new interior.

I had similar problems when putting my 76 back together. I could not fit the shifter console in place. I had put the gauge cluster in too soon.

I pulled it out and then the shifter console went in place. I also changed from the small screw nutclips to larger #6 screw nutplates and put in small #6 bolts thru the shifter console with small fender washers. The gauge cluster is a tight fit but it fits.

When time came to put in the parking brake console, I had to trim some carpet, move some cables that were getting pinched and remove some insulation behind the bolt point. When that was done, everything fit as it should. Tight but it fit.

I work on the car in 2 hour bursts. When I have a problem I usually sleep on it or research it here.
